Everton soccer player Martin Sherif has been fined £5,000 ($6,600) after admitting 61 breaches of the English Football Association’s (FA) betting rules. An independent FA regulatory commission imposed the financial penalty but decided against suspending Sherif from playing. According to the commission’s written decision, investigators identified six betting accounts registered to Sherif. These had been used to place 61 bets totaling £1,974.77 ($2,614). The bets returned £1,539.02 ($2,037), resulting in an overall loss of £435.75 ($577). Sherif, who spent his youth career at Everton, was on loan at Rotherham United and Port Vale during the 2025-26 season. Sherif Denied Personally Placing Bets Sherif admitted the charges in August but said that other people had placed the bets using his accounts. He acknowledged opening and funding the accounts, which the FA considered sufficient to breach its rules banning players from football betting. The FA challenged his claim that he was unaware of the betting activity. In its submissions, the governing body noted that Sherif had continued accessing the accounts to ensure they contained sufficient funds. “His suggestion that he was not aware of the football bets is therefore difficult to accept,” the FA argued. It also highlighted that some bets involved competitions in which Sherif or his club participated, raising concerns about football integrity. Representatives of Sherif argued against a financial penalty, noting that he had not personally placed the bets or benefited financially. They also pointed to his age, lack of professional experience, and efforts to educate younger Everton players about gambling risks. Sherif told the commission he had spoken to academy players about the dangers of betting and casino games. He also confirmed that he had now closed all his betting accounts. The commission accepted several mitigating factors, including his early admission, cooperation with the inquiry, his age, and his genuine remorse. However, it also identified aggravating circumstances. These included his apparent willingness to enable others who could not open betting accounts themselves to gamble through his accounts. The commission concluded that a £5,000 fine was “a fair and proportionate sanction” and that his conduct did not warrant a suspension from playing. Latest Premier League Betting Case Sherif’s punishment is the latest in several recent disciplinary cases involving soccer players and gambling in the English Premier League. In 2023, Brentford striker Ivan Toney received an eight-month suspension after admitting 232 breaches of the FA’s betting rules. Some of these bets were on his own team. The same year, Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali was suspended for 10 months following an investigation into illegal betting activity during his time in Italy. Another high-profile case involved West Ham midfielder Lucas Paquetá, who faced allegations that he deliberately received yellow cards to influence betting markets. However, in 2025 an independent commission cleared Paquetá of the spot-fixing charges following a two-year investigation.
