Everton football striker Martin Sherif has been fined for approximately 5000 euro for breaking betting rules over a 15-month period. Despite the fine, Sherif will not face any sporting ban. The Football Association charged Sherif in August for 61 bets on matches. The bets were placed between November 2024 and February 2026. An independent regulatory commission chaired by Sally Clark, with Andrew Adie and Tony Agana, ruled the fine was fair and proportionate. It concluded that no sporting sanction was needed given the nature of the breaches. Sherif, who is 20, admitted the charge early in the process. The commission found that Sherif did not place the 61 bets himself. Instead, he facilitated bets for third parties through his own name on 42 occasions during the 2024/25 Premier League season at Everton and on 19 occasions last season while on loan at Port Vale and Rotherham United, then both in EFL League One. The total stake was approximately €2,270, with returns of approximately €1,769, leaving an overall net loss of approximately €501. The commission stated that Sherif worked together with the FA and expressed true regret. It was reported that he talked with young players from the Everton academy about the hazards of gambling and he shut down all his gambling accounts so that none of them continues to exist in his name.
