Casino operator Melco Resorts & Entertainment Ltd says that the first guests for the REM, a newly-rebranded and refurbished luxury hotel tower at the City of Dreams (CoD) casino resort in Macau, are via a “private invitation-only programme”. Melco Resorts also issued some images of the interior in a Monday press release, including its ‘Luminous Suite’ product (pictured). Monday’s statement said: “REM welcomes its first invited guests exclusively through a private invitation-only programme, offering a privileged preview of its extraordinary experiences.” It added: “In October, REM will officially celebrate its grand opening, with a series of exceptional experiences set to be revealed.” The release confirmed REM is a 149-room property. According to the announcement, REM has seven room types, branded as: Premier Room; Twilight Suite; Luminous Suite; Euphoria Suite; Hypnotic Suite; The Haven (pictured above); and The Lair. The statement said the hotel was aimed in particular at clients who “value privacy and personalised service”. As of Monday, REM was not shown as an accommodation option on the hotel booking engine on the City of Dreams website. On Melco Resorts’ second-quarter earnings call on Thursday, Lawrence Ho Yau Lung, the company’s chairman and chief executive, had stated: “We’ve… soft opened REM already. We’re easing into it. The grand opening is set for after Golden Week in October.” He noted: “So far [its market] reception has been great.” October Golden Week – also known as Autumn Golden Week – is a Chinese-mainland holiday period encompassing China’s National Day on October 1. David Bain, an analyst at Texas Capital Securities, said in a Thursday note regarding REM: “We believe management is working to not just reposition existing customers up the food chain, but to clearly bifurcate the offering for incremental, ‘ultra-premium’ mass customers.” Melco Resorts also affirmed in its Monday statement that REM is named for ‘rapid eye movement’, the scientific term for a stage of sleep in humans. Another of City of Dreams’ luxury hotels – Morpheus, from the studio of architect Zaha Hadid – is named for the ancient Greek god of dreams and sleep.
