PointsBet has reached a settlement with Ontario’s Alcohol and Gaming Commission (AGCO), which resulted in a suspended license for only two days in the province. Originally, AGCO recommended a suspension period of five days, claiming that the operator’s subsidiary failed in “properly monitoring, identifying, recording, and reporting suspicious gambling actions.” The issue was related to bets made on a basketball player Jontay Porter, who was banned for a lifetime by the NBA in 2024 for violating gambling regulations. The regulator said: In addition, to enhance its control environment, PointsBet has agreed, as part of this resolution, that it will undertake an independent audit using an auditor and audit methodology approved by the AGCO and commits to addressing any findings. The remediation will be independently validated. The AGCO revealed the conclusion regarding the regulatory issue stating that PointsBet agreed to a two-day suspension of its gaming site in Ontario as per the terms of the settlement. In its initial reaction to the enforcement, the CEO of PointsBet Canada, Scott Vanderwel, stated that the company “disappointed by the AGCO’s proposed sanction.”
